About Us

The Crime Victims Services Unit can pay financial assistance to victims of crime who have suffered financial loss or injury as a result of a violent act that occured in the Northern Territory.

What you can claim, and the amount of money you might receive depends on whether you are considered a primary, secondary or family victim.

If you are a primary or secondary victim, you can check Schedules 1- 3 of the Victim of Crime Assistance Regulations for the amount that can be claimed for the injuries you have suffer.

I was injured as a direct result of a violent act, including domestic violence.

I am the victim of a compensable violent act (some sexual assaults are compensable violent acts).

I was injured trying to prevent another person from committing a violent act.

I was injured trying to help or rescue another person against whom a violent act was being committed.

I was injured trying to arrest a person who was committing or just committed a violent act.

You are a Primary Victim.  Use the Application for Financial Assistance by a Primary Victim

I was at the scene of the violent act, and have suffered an injury as a result of witnessing the act.

I am a child, step-child or under the guardianship of the victim, and I suffered an injury as a result of becoming aware of the violent act.

I am a parent, step- parent, or guardian of a child who was a victim, and I suffered an injury as a result of becoming aware of the violent act.

You are a Secondary Victim.  Use the Application for Financial Assistance by a Secondary Victim

I am the spouse or de facto partner of someone who has died as a result of a violent act.

I am the parent, step-parent, or guardian of someone who has died as a result of a violent act.

I am child, step-child or under the guardianship of someone who has died as a result of a violent act.

I am entirely or substantially dependent for financial support on someone who has died as a result of a violent act.

You are a Family Victim. Use the Application for Financial Assistance by a Family Victim

Under the scheme any victim who is experiencing financial hardship can claim an immediate up front payment of up to $5,000 to cover financial loss - out of pocket expenses such as medical costs and loss of earnings. Use the Application for Immediate Financial Assistance.

If you are a victim of a violent act or relative or close friend of a victim you are entitled to free crisis counselling. Crisis counselling services for victims of crime are located across the Territory. For more information, please contact Centacare NT on 1800 674 122.
